GUIDE TO CRUISING

COMMUNICATIONS
Are there phones, faxes and Internet connections available onboard?

Most ships offer a variety of communication options so you can stay in touch with those back home. You are provided with the ship's emergency numbers so you can give them to your family or friends prior to departure. It is usually quite expensive to call the ship or call from the ship, running $5 - $12 per minute. Most ships have Internet cafes or business centers onboard so you can send and receive e-mails at a relatively low cost. Some ships even offer unlimited computer usage for a set fee. It is best to check your cruise documents for the specifics pertaining to your cruise.

Can I use my cell phone?

Your cell phone usually works when the ship is close to a port. There are no cell stations in the middle of the ocean. We still recommend bringing your cell phone because it is a cheap and easy way to make calls when it does work. Many of the newer phones work in countries beyond the United States. You will need to contact your cell phone company to make sure your phone has roaming available where you will be traveling. We recently used our cell phone while in Bermuda to quickly and easily change an airline flight back from New York. We were able to avoid the hot and muggy phone booths, and take care of business from a pink sand beach.
